What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is permanent hair removal for everybody, regardless of skin color or
hair type. The electrologist inserts a very fine needle probe into the follicle
opening and then delivers a short electrical pulse to the root of the hair, this
process causes destruction to the hair root, and the hair is then removed and the
next hair is treated. Most people find electrolysis very tolerable. Facial hair,
breast and belly line hair, the unibrow area and hair on the external ear are all
popular areas for treatment. Multiple treatments needed.

ELECTROLYSIS FAQ’s
What Is Electrolysis, How Does It Feel, How Does it Work?
Electrolysis is the only FDA approved permanent hair removal solution. It is for every
body, regardless of skin color or hair type. It safely and permanently removes all types
of hair from all skin tones. It permanently destroys the growth cells of the hair follicle,
preventing treated hairs from growing back.
Electrolysis treatment consists of a professional electrologist inserting a very fine
needle probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft. A tiny
amount of electrical current is then applied to destroy the hair growth cells.
During treatment, you'll probably feel a momentary heat sensation or pinch, but most
people do not feel the insertion of the probe or the removal of the hair; the hair usually
slides out of the follicle when properly treated. Discomfort is minimal for most people.
Individual tolerances and the varying sensitivity of different body parts comes into play.
If needed, numbing creams are available online for general purchase and get the best
results if applied to the skin at least 30 min prior to your appointment. Many people
listen to music or even take a nap while being treated.
Which Areas Are Commonly Treated?
Facial hair, breast, bikini and belly line hair, the neck, the unibrow area and hair on the
external ear are all popular areas for treatment. Also the back of the neck, stray hairs
all over and any hair remaining after laser hair removal sessions are completed.
Who Is A Candidate For Electrolysis?
Everyone is a candidate! It is good for all skin types and all hair types and colors.
Generally, electrolysis is used on smaller areas on the face, neck, breast and belly line,
but can also be used on larger areas for those who are not a candidate for Laser Hair
Removal (those with lighter pigmented hair, red hair, gray hair, places where Laser did
not work). Let your technician know if you have any metal in your body (i.e. joint
replacements or implants) or are using or taking hair growth medications like Minoxidil
or Nutrifol.
Special note: Those with pacemakers or other implanted electrical devices are
generally excluded from electrolysis - talk to your doctor.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of sessions required for removal of hair varies from client to client.
Different body areas, hair types, hair density, hormones and skin tone all play a role.
Generally:
• OVERALL TREATMENT - most people who follow the recommended treatment plan
can expect to be done or nearly done within 8-16 clearings which can take 1-2 years
to complete.
• INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT - each treatment can be between fifteen minutes to over
an hour for a larger area. Large areas or hair dense areas may take multiple
appointments to complete a single clearing.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST ELECTROLYSIS TREATMENT:
  • You must STOP TWEEZING, threading or waxing for 2 weeks. Shaving or clipping the hairs is okay, however the hair must be of tweeze-able length for your appointment. Your electrologist must be able to see the hairs in order to perform treatment.
  • Come to your appointment with clean and makeup free skin to reduce risk of infection.
  •  Do not have a sunburn in the treatment area.
  •  Do not apply topical retinol to the treatment area for 5 days prior to treatment
  •  Be off antibiotics for at least 2 weeks.
  •  Feel free to bring and listen to your favorite music or podcast through your own
    headphones during your treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects?
There are very minimal side effects to electrolysis hair removal. Immediately following
the session, clients may experience temporary redness, swelling and sensitivity. Icing
the area after treatment may help reduce redness and swelling.
I’ve Had Laser Hair Removal But Still Have Some Hair Left. Can Electrolysis Work
On Those Hairs?
YES! Electrolysis and Laser can work hand in hand for the very best results. Unlike
laser, all types of hair can be successfully treated with electrolysis. Laser is great for
quickly treating large areas of hair but many people still have some hairs left after they
finish their sessions. Electrolysis is THE perfect method to finish the job. Electrolysis
can also remove white and red hairs that the Laser is unable to treat.

What Is Aftercare for Electrolysis Treatments?
Immediately following treatment, you may experience redness or tenderness which
usually disappears in a couple of hours. There is very little risk of complication or
serious skin irritation with electrolysis performed by a skilled practitioner.
For the first 24 hours following treatment, it's best to avoid activity that could irritate
hair follicles such as excessive sweating or even make-up. Tanning and/or prolonged
sun exposure is not recommended for at least 48 hours.
